Cycling East Statistics

Here are the results from the group poll of the Cycling East / Silk Road WhatsApp group, conducted in October/November 2025.
A total of 85 members participated. This is about 11% of all members and about 40% of all active members (those that wrote a message between 15th June and 15th November).

Further, some useful route maps, with info for road conditions etc. made by the participants are gathered here.

This survey was designed, prepared, conducted and evaluated under the aegis of Cycling East group admin Felix Puff (@radelix_and_rebikkey on Instagram)!
It is not the work of Belinda and Tizian from Zweiradler-Touren, we merely provided the webspace to publish the results.

Most people already had experience with multiday trips before this trip. But interesting to see is that many of people didn't use their bike much before this trip, not even for day trips.

There is a wide variation in how long people planned for their trip (excluding time they dreamed about it, only concrete planning time is considered here). Most concretely planned for 4 months or less.

Many in Cycling East knew people who also did bike travels before. However, 30% didn't know any other bike travelers when they started.

A large part of participants had a long-term job before they started. Several also studied and/or had short-term jobs.

Many people started without a time limit in mind. Several had a voluntary time limit, while only some have a strict time limit.

Most people who have a time limit plan to be on the road for 1 year or shorter. Of the ones that have a time limit in mind almost no one plans to stay travelling for longer than 1.5 years.

Note: this excludes people that do not have any plan for how long they'll continue travelling.

Very nice to see is that, on average, people that started without much experience in cycling are one the road the longest.

Very interesting to see is that the time spent planning for a trip is completely unrelated to the length of the actual trip.
