Cycling East Statistics

Here are the results from the group poll of the Cycling East / Silk Road WhatsApp group, conducted in October/November 2025.
A total of 85 members participated. This is about 11% of all members and about 40% of all active members (those that wrote a message between 15th June and 15th November).

Further, some useful route maps, with info for road conditions etc. made by the participants are gathered here.

This survey was designed, prepared, conducted and evaluated under the aegis of Cycling East group admin Felix Puff (@radelix_and_rebikkey on Instagram)!
It is not the work of Belinda and Tizian from Zweiradler-Touren, we merely provided the webspace to publish the results.

There is a wide range of why people like traveling by bicycle. Mainly it can be summarized as a passion for the outdoors, adventure and travelling in general. More specifically: More than half of all participants like to see amazing landscapes, getting in contact with locals, just spending time outdoors and learning about the world. Also, a large number of people like to reach remote areas and like to travel in an eco-friendly way. About 1/5 of people like trying local cuisine, meeting other travelers and doing something healthy or challenge their body.

Overall road preferences largely overlap among participants, with 4 considerations being fairly common and others rare. Most people prefer cycling scenic roads, not too far from civilization but also not in big cities. More people like to go on asphalted mountain roads than on remote gravel roads, although the latter may be more challenging. But both are fairly liked overall. Avoiding traffic is also important for the route planning of many people. Other road preferences are not that common throughout Cycling East members.

Quite some people plan to cycle everything on their own, without taking any other forms of transports. The large majority of people are ok with taking other forms of transport if cycling is too complicated and several of these actively want to avoid flying. Only a few don't mind taking other transports at all.
