Cycling East Statistics

Here are the results from the group poll of the Cycling East / Silk Road WhatsApp group, conducted in October/November 2025.
A total of 85 members participated. This is about 11% of all members and about 40% of all active members (those that wrote a message between 15th June and 15th November).

This survey was designed, prepared, conducted and evaluated under the aegis of Cycling East group admin Felix Puff (@radelix_and_rebikkey on Instagram)!
It is not the work of Belinda and Tizian from Zweiradler-Touren, we merely provided the webspace to publish the results.

Most people are on special touring bikes, made for travelling, or gravel bikes, while other bike types are rarer.

The type of bike has no effect on the overall speed of the participants.

About 1/3 of people started with a bike they already had at home and used before. Most others bought new or second-hand bikes.

Most bikes cost between 500 and 2000€ (with two peaks at 800 and 1500€) and are younger than 10 years. However, neither the age or price of a bike had any effect in how far participants pedaled.

Most bikes are steel frame, with some aluminum bikes, too. 2 participants ride a carbon bike and 1 rides a self-made wooden bike.

People ride all kind of gear systems. The most common gear system is 3 x 9, followed by 2 x 11, 3 x 10 and Rohloff with 14 gears.

Most bikes have 29” wheels, however 26” and 27.5” are also common.

A large amount of people is on classic tubes, with only some running tubeless.

People have all kinds of brake systems. Disc brakes, mechanical or hydraulic, are the most common.

Most people never made modifications on their bikes (besides changing worn parts). 1 participant even changed their bike or frame during their trip.
