While in the Pamirs you almost feel like you are on another planet, in Kyrgyzstan, as an earthling, you feel much more at home. It is much greener, either due to vast alpine meadows or even coniferous forests, and turquoise rivers flow through valleys bordered by snow-capped mountain peaks. This is not completely new territory if you have already been to the Caucasus or the Alps, but this should not obscure the fact that the infrastructure and population of the Kyrgyz Tian Shan Mountains, where you will, apart from countless herds of horses, marmots and the occasional yurt, not encounter anyone for days, cannot be compared with that of those mountains. Carrying supplies for several days and obtaining drinking water from rivers therefore play a much greater role here. Oh, and of course the passes are one or two thousand meters higher. The challenges are therefore not that much smaller than in the Pamirs. But they are rewarded with idyllic campsites and finally a day of swimming at Issykkul.
