Days 1173–1185 • Cairns – Hughenden •
From Rainforest to the Outback
Published on 04.10.2025, 10:30 in Barcaldine, Australia
This report’s podcast is only available in german: Vom Regenwald ins Outback.
After our campervan relocation from Darwin to Cairns (see episode 88), we now set off from Cairns on our bikes heading south. We don’t want to follow the rather busy coast, but rather spend a few hundred kilometers in the sparsely populated hinterland. To do this, we first have to climb the Atherton Tablelands and cycle through tropical rainforest for the last time on this tour. We experience one of the most beautiful encounters with people on this tour, but also the probably most unpleasant one. Then it’s off to the outback. 430 km lie between the two neighboring settlements of Mt. Garnet and Hughenden, and in this episode, we report on the challenges, but also the elation, of our first stretch of Australian bushland.

We are going to get on our bicycles once again and further collect kilometers :-)
See you again soon!
