China, that is a dense road network with lots of choice when it comes to routes, lush green landscapes and mega cities that are almost insistent signs of civilization. But none of that is really the focus of this podcast episode, because to get from Ulaanbaatar to this China, you still have to cross the Gobi. And there is only one road to choose from for around 800 km, the landscape is anything but lush and civilization can only be spoken of in a very limited sense. One train after another passes next to us on the branch line of the Trans-Siberian Railway, but we stay true to the asphalt for all 12 days of travel. Then we reach Hohhot, the capital of the so-called Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in China and the gateway to the kind of China we described above.
