South of Izmir, mass tourism begins on the Turkish Aegean coast, but between the hotel cities hides one ancient Greek (wonder-of-the-world) city after another. We suffer a little from tourism, agriculture and especially the lack of nature in this region, but when we reach the southern coast of Turkey the situation changes: There are once again a few mountains to overcome, which are too steep for fields and therefore densely forested. We still swim in the sea at night in mid-November, visit a ghost town that has been abandoned for 100 years, and explain what Santa Claus is doing in Demre’s town emblem.
