Days 859–878Leshan – Kunming

History of China V: Chiang Kai-Shek

A Chain of Reservoirs named Yangtze

Published on 25.11.2024, 13:56 in Kunming, China

This report’s podcast is only available in german: Eine Stausee-Kette namens Jangtsekiang.

Between Leshan and Kunming, the landscape is cut through by many deep gorges. We first follow the gorges of the Dadu, Mabian and Zhongdu rivers, but our actual destination is of course the king of them all: the Yangtze! We follow its course for over 400 kilometers, which is as spectacular as it is varied. We cycle along the bottom of deep canyons, but also high up along steep, rocky slopes. And to our surprise, we also cross several almost disparate vegetation zones. But of course, nothing is given for free in life: we pay the price in the form of climbing and many long tunnels that are either dusty, roaring loud or unlit (but fortunately rarely all three at the same time). Exhausted, we reach Kunming – the city of eternal spring, which rightly bears this name and is well suited to recovering a little before our last China adventure for the moment.
