History of China II: Opium, Boxers and the Unequal Contracts
The Three Walls of China
Published on 30.09.2024, 09:28 in Pingyao, China
This report’s podcast is only available in german: Die drei Chinesischen Mauern.
Small but paved roads with little traffic, which meander through the mountains, and relaxed cycling through beautiful landscapes: this is what we were particularly looking forward to in China – and now, in the border area of Inner Mongolia and Shanxi Province, we have found exactly that. It is a region in which three “walls” – made of stone, wood and steel respectively – separate the Chinese heartland from the Gobi Desert. To finally reach the provincial capital Taiyuan, we have to maneuver our bikes through hordes of coal trucks, but are then at least rewarded with perhaps the best cycle path of our tour so far.

We are going to get on our bicycles once again and further collect kilometers :-)
See you again soon!
